Announcing an Electronic Evangelical Library
The Evangelical Library based near Baker Street Station in London has begun a new project to produce a Library of Reformed and Puritan works available at www.elebooks.org.uk.
Starting with rare works which have not been reprinted for many years the library has begun an ambitious effort to produce an evangelical library on the Internet. This project has tremendous potential to benefit the reformed community in that it is providing an access point for excellent literature which is already available freely as well as providing a mechanism for the production of electronic versions of texts which have not previously been available. These electronic books (e-books) can be downloaded using any internet connection around the world at very little cost and can be searched individually and collectively for key words, authors and bible references.
The project has started with two works which have not been reprinted and which are difficult to get hold of.
The first is a series of sermons by James Durham on the Subject of the Conscience. This is a subject on which 21st Century pastors need to rediscover Puritan insight and familiarity. Durham examines the main texts on the conscience from the New Testament and gives examples of Puritan application to the heart.
The second is a work by the famous Westminster Divine, Samuel Rutherford. He deals with the great subject of Christ Dying and drawing sinners to himself. This is really a work on the nature of Sovereign Grace. In addition there are several more well known works which are available. These include Charles Hodge’s “Systematic Theologyâ€, William Gurnall’s “The Christian in Complete Armourâ€, James Buchanan’s works on Justification†(available as a free sample) and “The Holy Spirit,†“The Fountain of Life†by John Flavel and “The History of Protestantism†by Wylie.
Also available is the start of a project to provide a full set of the works of R.L. Dabney as e-books. Currently his “Systematic Theologyâ€, two volumes of “Discussions,†“Sacred Rhetoric,†“Penal Substitution†(very relevant to the recent controversy in the UK), “The Life of Stonewall Jackson†and his “Defence of Virginia and the South†are available.
It is anticipated that most of the following works will also be made available as part of the 2006 subscription: John Arrowsmith “A Chain of Principles,†Richard Baxter’s “Crucifying the Worldâ€, “The Ten Commandments†by Dod and Cleaver, “A commentary on the book of Job†by James Durham, Polhill on “The Divine Will†John Preston on “Life Eternal,†“Justification†by Anthony Burgess, Richard Bolton’s work on “Self –Examination,†“Practical Philiosophy†by R. L. Dabney and “The Life and Letters of R.L. Dabney†by T.C. Johnson. The offer of twenty five sizeable volumes without the need for any new book shelves is surely too good to miss for £25!
