Various Ways of Understanding the Relationship between the Intellect and Will

Before I endeavor to answer the question of whether Plantinga has properly understood Edwards, it might be helpful to consider various ways in which the intellect and will are understood to relate to one another in the literature on the subject.1 What I discuss here is not intended to be exhaustive, but rather it is suggestive only.

Putting the matter as simply as possible, there are two general ways to understand the relationship between the intellect & the will, along with some significant variation within these two broad perspectives. These two categories are intellectualism and voluntarism.

Westminster Responds to the Da Vinci Code

In an e-mail sent to Westminster (PA) students Dr. William Edgar announced the launch of a new cultural apologetics site designed to combat the theology found in The Da Vinci Code book and movie. Here is an excerpt from the e-mail:

Many people are troubled by the suggestions made in the story about the church suppressing the real Jesus, who was married, had children, and so forth. So the site is meant not only to answer the questions people may have about the facts, but also to guide them into thinking more deeply about why they are doubting and why they should come to faith.

The BBC put out an interesting piece on classic ethics exercises. You can read the questions, respond, and see how other people have responded. It’s telling of how a biblical worldview often leaves us in the minority.
