A Quick Note on Machen

Here’s a handy tip for you: Machen’s middle name (his mother’s maiden name) is pronounced like “Gressam.”  Not many people actually pronounce the name correctly, even at Westminster Theological Seminary.

    I remember reading this factual tidbit in a footnote/endnote in Ned Stonehouse’s biography of Machen and thankfully have never mispronounced Machen’s middle name since. It is one of my little victories.

    That’s actually where I learned how to pronounce Gresham too.

    I used to live in Portland, OR and there is a suburb named Gresham (pronounced like it looks) so I believe I am excused from my former error. :)
